13. Askja caldera

The Askja caldera lake is a crater of gigantic size between Mt. Herdubreid and Vatnajokull. It was mostly unknown, even to Icelanders, until a very large eruption in 1875 when the smaller Viti (Hell) crater was formd, which led to calamities in Iceland, the killing of lifestock and hunger, and triggered a migration of people from Iceland and to the Americas. Askja is Iceland's deepest lake, at 217 meters.
